How to Do Real Academic Research in High School

You do not need access to a university lab, and you certainly do not need a PhD, to do real research. What you do need is a good question, a method that suits it, and someone experienced enough to guide you along the way. Here is how to move from simply being curious toward a finished project you can be proud of.

Start with a question, not a topic

“Climate change” is a topic. “Does rooftop vegetation measurably lower street-level temperatures in my city?” is a research question, and the difference between the two matters a great deal. A good research question is specific, it can be answered with evidence you are actually able to gather, and it is small enough that you can finish the work within a few months.

Write down five questions in an area you genuinely care about, and then go through the list and cross out every one that you have no realistic way of testing. The question that survives this process is your starting point.

Read the existing literature first

Before you collect a single piece of data, find out what is already known about your question. Use Google Scholar, your school or local library, and open-access journals to read somewhere between 10 and 20 papers that sit close to your question. As you read, take note of their methods and not only their conclusions, because the methods are where you will learn how research in your field is actually carried out.

This step also protects you from re-answering a question that has already been solved, and at the same time it shows you where the gap lies, the space your own project can usefully fill.

Choose a method you can actually execute

Ambition is good, but feasibility is better. Think in terms of a survey you can genuinely run, a dataset you can actually access, or an experiment you can safely perform at home or at school. A modest method carried out well will always beat a grand one that you are never able to finish.

Before you begin collecting anything, define your variables, decide on your sample, and work out exactly how you will analyse the results once they are in.

If your project involves people (through surveys or interviews, for example), animals, or any kind of safety hazard, obtain ethics approval and informed consent before you collect any data. Many competitions and journals, ISEF among them, require a documented review, and any study that involves minors needs proper consent. Whatever you are doing, run your experiments under appropriate supervision.

Find guidance

A mentor, whether a professor, a PhD student or a working researcher, will save you months of effort by catching a flawed method early, before you have built too much on top of it, and by pointing you toward the right tools for the job. Structured mentorship programs exist precisely because independent research is genuinely hard to navigate on your own.

If you do work with a mentor, come to every meeting prepared. Share your question, the reading you have done and a draft plan, and ask specific questions rather than a vague “what should I do?” A mentor can give far better help when they can see where you already stand.

Keep a research log and iterate

In every single session, record what you did, what happened as a result, and what you changed afterwards. Research is iterative by nature. Your first method will almost certainly have problems, and your log is the tool that lets you improve it step by step and, later on, write an honest methods section.

Produce a real output

Finish with something concrete, such as a written paper, a submission to a journal or a competition, a presentation you can deliver, or a working prototype that actually runs. A tangible output of this kind is what turns the vague claim “I did research” into something specific and concrete you can point to, both in your own reflection on what you learned along the way and, as one part of a holistic application, when it comes to university admissions.
